TJ & Ashley Engaged | Miller Outdoor Theater Engagements

8
Feb 2012

TJ & Ashley have been dating for about 500 years…okay more like since they were about 18, going on 5 years now. That’s a long time! Their wedding is coming up this Fall, and they have no doubts about what they want. They both are looking for a unique style to their wedding, so it’s going to be very exciting about what comes of it all!

They were a blast for their engagements, having the time of their lives and completely enjoying our engagement session downtown. They both rocked some cool clothes, her purple dress and his new Tony Lama boots (bough especially for their photos). Way to rock it out guys!

New! The After Session

19
Jan 2012

We’re proud to offer a new addition to the Big Box lineup.

Enter The After Session.

A Two Hour after the wedding session in your Wedding Dress and Suit. After the wedding, after the pressure, informal, & just the two of you. Get ready for some super fun & creative post-wedding photos.

You want one more session to remember your wedding day by. To be able to have just one more set of photos in your dress before it’s preserved, and this will most likely be the last time you get to wear your dress too! Bring out your new husband and we will head out, just the 3 of us, to locations we might not have otherwise gone to. We can disregard grass, pebbled roads, even water.

But we can draw the line where you like it. We can get wet, or stay dry, we can head out to the country, or stick to some sleek urban spots.

You might not want to destroy your dress, but lets have some fun – knowings it’s going to get cleaned later! So we’re going to head out for what you could call “Trash The Dress”, but we’re not going to destroy anything…unless you want to! ;)

Book your after session today. Sessions are 10% off until 2/28/12.

Should you rent or buy your Wedding Tuxedo?

Groomsmen in Rented Wedding Suits

Brides have spent countless hours researching their dresses, choosing colors for bridesmaids dresses, accessorizing, accessorizing, accessorizing…and surely she looks fan-tastic.Now it’s time to choose a tuxedo to rent for the guys though. And that’s where you’ve got two choices up front. Before you choose between cumber bun tuxes, or European cut suits, sterling silver cuff links, ties, or bow-ties, you’ve got a choice.

To RENT or to BUY?
that is the question

Both options are good choices – but in our opinion one has much more utility than the other. We are big on utility too (SUV’s, wedding decorations that look good in your home…).

The crazy thing is how much of a factor cost isn’t. Really at the end of the day you’ll be set at about the same cost either way. For many weddings we see the grooms & groomsmen spending about $140-$160 to rent their tuxedos for the wedding day.

Benefits of Renting
Exact Matches.
If your bridal party is coming from across the country they may not all have access to the same store to purchase matching suits. So rentals give you the flexibility to make sure everyone’s tuxedo or suit fits properly and matches.

Slick Options.
Lots of suit shops have some very unique options. And everything a guy needs is in the bag – even down to the socks (though I will tell you they are often single use, and about worn out by the evenings end!)

Plus side to Buying
Utility.
Of course, if you own the tuxedo or suit then groomsmen get to wear the clothes again. There is always a place for a good black or brown suit too. It can be changed up later too with different ties or vests too.

Affordable.
Just a quick Google search shows suits from Menswarehouse.com & K&G.com for $99 or less. Add about $10 for shipping, and $30 for fitting, and $20 worth of shirts & ties over at H&M.com and you’re at the $160 range, just about the same as a rented tuxedo.

Fitted Correctly.
Since you’ve purchased a suit and taken it to a real tailor, chances are it’s going to be a better fit for you also. Often times we see Jackets that are way too large, pants that look extremely wide – and that really detracts from the nice tux they just shelled out some cash for. Custom fit is always going to be better.

Suits to purchase for a wedding (2)Suits to purchase for a wedding (3)Suits to purchase for a wedding (4)

Grooms Gifts.
Consider this. Let your grooms gift be purchasing part of the guys clothes. Hey! Something they can actually use! Consider contributing $30 to each guy to help out with his suit purchase. I guess this would work with a rental also, but this way they get to keep their gift after the wedding.

Uniformity.
That’s right, your suits can be exactly the same too. Find a suit at Menswarehouse.com or K&G.com and the groomsmen can all order their suits & accessories online, from the same places!

The results are in
Once you’ve thought about it. Things really do make sense to purchase rather than rent. Unless there is a very specific tuxedo that you’re looking for. Always remember though that cost is a factor that you have to consider when asking your wedding party to purchase something for the wedding. If you have a younger, college-aged crowd that can be a lot of money for a one time use. More mature wedding parties might not bat an eye at the price for a one-day rental.

Happy Wedding Planning to you all!

Corben’s First Birthday Party | Odessa Portrait Photographer

12
Jan 2012

Corben, 1 year old on 1/6/12, just finished up his Sock Monkey Themed birthday party yesterday. With a guest list with topping 60 people I was sure the house was going to be full beyond belief. But it wound up being just right, just the right size, and just the right amount of people.

The coolest thing about little kid birthday parties is when people contribute to make it a great day. Aunt Diana Jones made the cake & cupcakes (she’ll soon be starting up her own business in Odessa, so keep an eye out for that!), balloons were contributions from Miles & Jacque Haiduk, Cupcake stands & drinks contributions by Cassidy’s Sandwich Shop, and photography by Big Box Photo.

All in all it was a great time, even while the birthday boy was flying sky high on Benadryl & Tylenol to help with teething. :0)

Happy Birthday Buddy, see you again in a few weeks!

Setting your Wedding Budget

10
Jan 2012

Budgeting your wedding can be a task for any bride to be. My wife is a master planner and did a stellar job keeping our wedding under wraps – but it is a very difficult task.

Our friends over at Real Simple put it all out there and built a great worksheet to help you get things in line when setting a rough initial budget for your wedding.

The list is broken up into main categories with suggested budget percentages, and subcategories from there.  We’ve spent a bit of time looking over this list and really feel like it’s giving a fair amount to each category too. Of course we always feel that photography is more important, but what can we say other than we’re a bit bias?

You can get your hands on the complete worksheet over at RealSimple.com or you can get the Budget Worksheet here.

City Place Wedding Reception | Garrett & Kristen

8
Jan 2012

It’s pretty cool to see who you get to meet over the years. Friend of friend of friends and before you know it you’re telling a group of guys to jump in their wedding tuxedos thinking “Man, these guys can really cover some ground – like they’re really really high in the air.” Come to find out it’s because half of them are in the Dude Perfect Basketball group. No wonder these guys can jump, it’s part of what they do making their crazy shots.

There’s always jokes from the groom about carrying a basketball down the aisle with them, but I can confidently say that two out of two weddings for these guys, the bride has shut that idea down (See The Cotton Mill Wedding with Sean & Melanie Townsend). For good reason too – both of these weddings were really cool, basketballs just didn’t fit the decor.

Garrett & Kristen were married in the Summer at the Dallas Arboretum, at Nancy’s Garden. The ceremony was wonderfully simple too, white chairs lined with rose petals, and a simple white table behind the minister for the bride & groom to take communion. What really set this wedding apart was the absolutely tangible love Kristen & Garrett have for each other. Have a look at the photos below and you can see that the gardens are an extension of what the ceremony was about.

The reception was held at City Place in Dallas. Brightly lit by the afternoon sun, the reception was a smash hit with a full meal and wedding cake squares. Oh my goodness I could get fat gorging myself on those. The staff at the reception was absolutely helpful, efficient and nearly silent they did a great job.

Congrats Garrett & Kristen, I’m excited to stay in touch with you guys and see what the future has to hold for you guys!
